Srinagar, Oct 23 (KNO): With the onset of winters, the Ministry of Power (MoP) has allocated 330 Megawatts (MWs) power for Jammu and Kashmir for a period of three months beginning from December 2026. But officials warn the power crisis may hit earlier in November. Top officials informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that “329 MWs of power from Central share have been allocated to Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday for the month of December-2026, January and February 2027.” “We may face the power deficit challenge for the months of November-2026 and March-2027,” the official added. The official further informed that during the peak winters Jammu and Kashmir usually face a power shortage of 800-1000 MWs. “We meet these shortage with the centrally allocated share and power exchanges” “As of now we have a power demand of nearly 2100-2200 MWs and during the peak winters the power demand touches nearly 2900 MWs,” he said It also said that MoP has allocated over 870 Megawatts (MWs) of power for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from the unallocated quota of Central Generating Stations (CGSs) of the northern region. “However, out of the total allocated power, we get only nearly 600 MWs in accordance with the Plant Load Factor (PLF).” In the meantime, the official documents accessed by KNO reads that J&K and Ladakh may receive 655 MWs un-allocated power from the pool of northern region utilities from 01-11-2026 to 30-11-2026 or modified otherwise. It also said that from 01-12-2026 to 31-12-2026, J&K and Ladakh may receive 845 MWs un-allocated power from the pool of northern region utilities followed by 845 MWs from 01-01-2027 to 31-01-2027 or modified otherwise and 655 MWs from 01-02-2027 to 28-02-2027 respectively. As already reported by this news agency, Jammu and Kashmir is staring at a repeat of last winter's ‘power crisis’, with demand expected to match or exceed last year's peak while hydro generation stays lean. Officials warn that unless action is taken now, the same conditions will return. The official documents in this regard said “Last winter, demand in the J&K control area rose to around 3,200 MW as heating load picked up in the early morning and night hours.” “Demand is expected to be similar or higher this winter, and hydro generation is likely to be lean again, so the same conditions are likely to return unless action is taken in advance,” it reads—(KNO)
